I heard you can take a subway into Chicago from some point here. Is this true.
Yes! The South Shore runs from Chicago to the Dunes! There are multiple stops and Dune Park Station stops near the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center. mysouthshoreline.com
DUNES LOL
Did anyone else read "Dunes lol" in the thumbnail?
10000 years ago? I don’t think so. Jesus created the earth only 4000 years ago
I’ve been there. Even people from Indiana don’t know about it
It looked like it said Dunes Lol like it was making fun of it lol
Love this!
Great town! I might move there. 🙏
Don't mind the entry fee. But we've been ask to given away out Credit Card Pin to enter and had to argue hard that we're not giving away the Pin. They almost didn't let us in. Another Card Not requesting a Pin saved us... But Kind of schocking the way the cashier pressed on us to given her the Pin..
Any discounts for seniors?
Yes! There is a yearly $20 pass for those age 62+. There's also a lifetime senior pass for $80. www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm
Where is the ice skating located?
Valparaiso's Central Park Plaza offers ice skating during the winter. This year, it's open until March 10th.
I live here. Gotta love it. I made an ad here for Diana of the dunes. Got myself a green jacket aswell.
Thank you for these beautiful and informational videos.
I live in Westville as a kid in the 80-90’s and loved coming here as a kid. It’s crazy how different it looks 30 years later.
Our northwest Indiana jewel is now a National Park...so great
Congrats old Penn State Roomie. Im 6 months away from joining you in federal retirement.
Nooo glaciers were well over 300 feet high!! They were over a mile high!!
Nice farewell Paul! Enjoy - glad we got to have you at MISS for a while.
Congratulations Paul!
Does Indiana dunes have driftwood?
Yes, there is some. It can’t be taken with you though. Except for trash, it’s prohibited to take anything from the beaches here.
Cool! Going there next month😊😊😊
I so want to do this!!!!
So much to see and dune
lol
I love nature, have planted thousands of trees, don't litter, pick up garbage, etc. but some of these "protective measures" go a little too far. In my opinion. Nature occurs naturally, humans walking on grass cannot be more natural.
Hi John, The grass of concern is Marram grass. It’s the long (2-3ft) beach grass you see growing on the dunes. It keeps the dune stable and prevents erosion. When people walk on it, it can kill the grass and eventually cause the dune to erode. It’s important we keep on designated trails in order to keep our dunes healthy. Additionally, in some areas, like West Beach, we have some federally endangered plants that scientists at the national park are working to preserve and restore. We don’t want people trampling plants like those either! Let us know if you have any other questions!
Look forward to going there this memorial day weekend!
The Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis White River Park has a exhibit the showing Indianapolis was under 6,000 feet of glacier at one time with the last of it going away 14,000 years ago. 6,000 feet of glacier make it easy to understand how the ground was bulldozed and cut off to have the flat farm fields of today. One geologic documentary had the mid Indiana glacial region having the fist 200 feet earth being glacial till.
We visit the dunes almost every summer. Where are they located at, gotta visit
They're currently right off of the square in downtown Valpo at 12 Jefferson St. They're also renovating a building at 607 Lincolnway that will allow them to expand!
❤
I did it for the first time today - alone and in the rain. I had a blast!
Congratulations!!!
Can I get by car to State Park without paying entrance fee to National Park?
Yes! The State Park has its own entrance separate from the National Park. You will need a State Park pass though.
@@IndianaDunes thx! I intend to make a short stop and State Park fee is acceptable.
Oh wow I lived in indiana my whole life and never knew we had dunes! That's pretty cool! But where's the camels yo?
great video . really appreciate it
If you add up all the taxes I pay, I am paying over 50%. 36% Federal, 8% State and 4% local. Property tax that amounts to about $15,000 each year and after this I pay between 6% and 20% tax on every penny I spend. I bought one of the America the Beautiful passes when I turned 62 and was told that it would get me into every National Park in the nation free. I see that is not the case. My opinion of the NPS and my two US Senators and Representative just decreased by 50%.
America the Beautiful passes do get you into the Indiana Dunes National Park! They do not, however, get you into the Indiana Dunes State Park. Since you are 62 you now qualify for the national park senior pass. You can either get a $20 annual or an $80 lifetime pass that will get you into all of the national park sites. You can find more info here - www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm
The Dunes were my childhoods playground. I live in Arizona now, but the Dunes are my sanctuary when I visit family back in Indiana. Having to buy a national park pass seems insane, but I hope monies can be used to keep the beaches clean. I'm always aghast at how much trash washes ashore when I visit the Dunes. I hope dogs are still allowed. Most national parks hate dogs but love horses.
Worst bicycling state in the US. Trails are glorified sidewalks.
Is there any information concerning the flora and fauna? Is there any biological research going on? How bad are the mosquitoes? Any fossils ? Are there protected areas? Is the water clear or an algae festival?
The national and state parks both do research in the parks. The Indiana Dunes is one of the most biodiverse areas in the country with more species than Yosemite. It was dubbed the birthplace of plant ecology after Henry Cowles Bog studied plant succession here. We're a birding hotspot as the shape of Lake Michigan and the many different Indiana Dunes habitats are the perfect excuse for migrating birds to all stop here. During May especially, hundreds of different species can be spotted. As for fossils, there are many crinoids and other small fossils that can found on the shore, but we urge people to leave them for others to find. The mosquitoes can be bad after rains on some of the more wet trails. We have bogs and fens and wetlands that are amazing places to explore, but we suggest mosquito spray. The dunes themselves are protected and we ask that people remain on the marked trails. We have fragile habitats and plants that need to be protected. One area, Pinhook Bog, is so fragile it is accessible only on ranger-led tours. It has carniverous plants and orchids during the warmer months.
I highly recommend "Dunes Boy", the 1943 Pulitzer Prize winner. The noted naturalist Edwin Way Teal would spend his summers on his grandparent's farm "Lone Oak" in the middle of the Dunes during the first decades of the 20th century. Furnessville road, which connects US 12 and US 20 in the National Park, is the only remaining remnant of the village, other than its historic cemetery. Well worth the read. BTW Furnessville Road at the US 12 end, follows the ancient beach of Lake Chicago. You can see the ridge at Furnessville and Hadenfeld Roads. We lived on the top of that ridge many years ago. House is now gone.
Mr. Foust loved this video!!!! Thanks for sharing!!!!!
This video is so awesome! Can't wait to hike these trails and check this off my national park bucket list.
Where is that spot where you can see Chicago from?
The beaches furthest west have the best views. I've personally seen it from the State Park, Porter, and West Beach.
Wow! Outrageous. What if you want to spend one day at the beach? Rip off! It was bad enough to pay for parking.
I’m looking for a Leo Twain of the dunes
first thing, the bathroom stinky. food was not good. stale chips, burgers didn't fit the bun, fish was over cooked. waiter was rude. Will not recommend.
So sorry you had a bad experience at this location.
You mentioned that you can mail the guide to potential visitors? Please mail one to me. Where do i register my physical address?
Hi! You can request a guide at www.indianadunes.com/destination-guides/print-guides/
coolness.
It's PUBLIC land. We pay TAXES. We LIVE HERE!! All we want is to swim, hike, get away from traffic, watch the sunset.... maybe pee. The restrooms are CLOSED 3 of 4 seasons of the year, even though I paid the Indiana Dunes State Park YEAR-long pass-- why no bathroom access, hmm??? Is this going to be the same for the National Park?? Geeze, I have to pay a different fee for every beach I go to. Sick of paying for being OUTSIDE. But, kicked out BEFORE SUNSET in many places. Can't even collect rocks, for the love of God. Damn.
p͎r͎o͎m͎o͎s͎m͎
Whatever you do, don't try to take pictures or video in public, or in public buildings. If you do, bring cash for bail. This town has a history of freaking out on photographers.
